Intel Unleashes new 815 Mobo Chipset Supporting 133MHz SDRAM

Intel , despite the recent recall of 820 chipsets supporting 133MHz SDRAM memory due to a faulty MTH (Memory Translator Hub), has been on the road to supporting 133MHz after all. The chipset is called the Intel 815 and Intel 815E chipsets and are based on a new Hub Architecture that provides support for PC133 and PC100 memory along with AGP 4x and 2x graphics capabilities. In 1,000-unit quantities, the 815 chipset is priced at $41 each and the 815E is priced at $46 each, so motherboards using these chipsets should be priced at around $120-170 depending on chipset used and additional features.

The 815E differs from the 815 in that it supports a new I/O Controller Hub (ICH2 the same as used on recently announced 820E chipset ) that provides an additional USB controller (for a total of four USB ports), a 10/100 Ethernet interface (utilizing the Intel Pro/100 Fast Ethernet Controller) and dual Ultra ATA/100 controllers. An enhanced AC97 interface that supports up to six-channel audio capabilities including full surround-sound for Dolby Digital audio is also supported.

Intel has also announced a new motherboard dubbed the D815EEA based on an ATX form factor and the 815E chipset. The D815EEA supports both PC133 and PC100 SDRAM memory, comes with all the features listed above for the 815E chipset and will be available through resellers beginning this week for prices estimated between $150 and $170.
