In a move that pushes USB to its screaming limits TEAC has announced its new 8x8x32x USB CD-Rewriteable Drive.
Since USB 1.1 was released no one has even approached the alleged 1500KBs that the new standard was capable of. Most manufacturers stuck to the 4×4 CDRW spec that was nice and safe.
One of these reasons might be the increadible system overhead of USB 1.x. We have kicked around a few devices in our lab and we can tell you that we couldnt even get 6x CDR without at least running a 700MHz PIII.
One thing TEAC might be banking in is Burn-Proof technology. Burn-Proof sets up a continuous read-write stream that virtually eliminates buffer underruns and the creation of CDR coasters.
Either way it is a bold move on TEACs part and should be interesting to see. MSRP on this baby is 179.00.
